Clann Lir Playbill Lir, King of the sea, and his beloved wife have four beautiful children named Fionnuala, Aedh, Fiachra and Conn. When his wife dies, the King and his children grieve deeply, and after a time, he remarries. The new Queen, Aoife, finds that Lir loves his children dearly, and she begins to feel jealous of them.

And so she determines to have the King all to herself. She invites the children on a journey, and at the beautiful Lake Derravaragh, encourages them to bathe. But once they are in the water, she uses her husband's magic staff to cast a spell on them and changes them into swans. Her spell will last for three times three hundred years, and the swans will have to live in three different places, until the dawn of the New Age releases them.

The Queen is punished by the same magic staff, and transformed into a demon of the air.

The children spend three hundred years on Lake Derravaragh, Sea of Moyle and the deserted western shore of the Ocean.

Time passes until a holy hermit hears them singing and responds with music of his own. The children hear, for the first time, the Christian bell of the New Age. The hermit baptizes them. The children die and transcend the mortal bonds that have held them for so long.
